☆ Review: Diesel Guns – “Lock n’ Road” ☆

Diesel Guns - PC

The 90s was a good time for vehicle combat video games. With such titles as Death Rally, Twisted Metal, Interstate ’76 and Carmageddon, there were a number of mainstream titles to get the engines revving.

But vehicle combat sims have become few and far between in modern gaming.

Enter Diesel Guns by Russian Developer LLC Intenzibne, a fast-paced combat racer that aims to mix the skills based combat of first-person shooters with the adrenalin fueled driving of a racing title.

As Diesel Guns is still only in Alpha, the current game modes on offer are a little lacking, with only online deathmatch and team deathmatch available to play. The matchmaking is very quick, however, so for me finding a game was no problem.

Before each match players must first choose their vehicle. Beginners are given a basic car to start, with more unlocked through experience gained by playing. Each car has it’s own strengths and weaknesses, such as higher speeds or more armour. Players must also choose what weapons they want to take into battle such a rockets, a shotgun or a cannon, but currently, the choice is very limited in the Alpha build. Each weapon does have a number of firing modes however so that keeps things interesting.

Matches play out in an arena setting rather than a race track. There is no racing mechanic (at least not yet) and the object of the game is to destroy all the enemies in typical deathmatch style. While ammo is very limited, there are a number of weapons and support pickups scattered around the maps.

Each map features ramps, tunnels and obstacles to weave in and out of while trying to furiously blast each other off the face of the earth. In addition to your weapons, your car also has a boost, shield and jump ability to give you a bit of survivability.

One interesting feature of Diesel Guns is the ability to slam your vehicle down into the ground while in mid-air to perform a devastating slam attack. By making use of the various ramps scattered around the map and timing your attacks and slam just right, you’ll be able to rain down fire on your enemies from above, right before you bring two tonnes of pain down on their smoking chassis.

Summary:
Diesel Guns still has a long way to go, but for now, the Alpha build shows promise. The graphics are decent, the controls and physics get the job done, and the gameplay is fast and genuinely fun. Imagine rocket league with guns and you’ll begin to get an idea of what the game feels like. What it really lacks now is content, but that’s to be expected at such an early stage in the development.

If you’re looking for something you can enjoy for a few hours with friends, then Diesel Guns is a fun experience at a decent price.
