☆ Review: Illusoria "Bring Your 45 Year Old Man Reflexes" ☆

Illusoria is a 2d platformer game released on Steam by Indie game developer Under The Bridge.

When I was given a chance to do my first game review, I jumped at the chance, and I was especially excited to find out I was reviewing a platformer.  

2d Platform games are one of my favourite game genres, probably second to first person shooters.

Anyway, let’s get to the review!

First, some small first impression issues I had initially had after installing Illusoria.

• I couldn’t read the main menu text as it had defaulted to some other language other than English (Spanish I think).  This WAS was a bit annoying, but to be fair it only took a moment to figure out I could alter it back to English using the appropriate menu.  I don’t know if it was my machine that caused the issue though.
   
  
• When I tried to play the game I couldn’t work out what the controls were (they seemed to be non-standard keys that I wasn’t used to), but I guess I DID rush in and not read the controls menu (typical male, not reading instructions…hahaha).

   
  

Well after my initial hiccups, I got down to playing the game.  The graphics look really good, and the character animation is very nice.  The music and sound effects are nice and seem appropriate to the setting.  

There are some great platformer mechanics in the game like being able to climb up certain vine-covered walls, and push/pull boxes around to access other parts of the levels.  There also are some interesting enemies/dangers in the game, but I’m not going to spoil them here ;)

Gameplay-wise, initially I found Illusoria hard-as-nails after the first couple of screens, and I was getting rather frustrated, but that could have been down to my 45 year old (old-man) reflexes lol.

I did persevere though, and I started enjoying it much more as I got used to the controls and my reflexes improved.

Sometimes it does seem as though the game controls don’t work properly after some character/action animations have finished, but it probably just could use a small amount of love still with the controls, and it doesn’t happen very often.

Summary:

Overall, I am enjoying Illusoria as a platformer, including various “oh no” moments when I die (wrong key, bad timing).

I need to play it more still but I’m going to keep going with the game.

I recommend Illusoria to lovers of 2d platformer games, nice graphics, and interesting game mechanics.
