🦸‍♂️ Million to One Hero - REVIEW - "Mario Maker's plucky younger cousin" 🦸‍♂️ #GameDev #IndieGames

Playing like an Indie version of Mario Maker (MM) with a fantastical ancient Greek theme, Million to One Hero (MTOH) adds a twist on things by also throwing in the ability to add a narrative to your tale, something which works well and adds depth to your created adventures.
It's going to be hard to not mention Mario Maker throughout this review as it is clearly such a touchstone for Over The Top Games' title.

Effectively split into two halves, MTOH has a fully functioning platforming side complete with a story as well as the ability to play one of the hundreds (and growing) user-created stages which range from gentle and casual to twitch-tastic.
There is also the creative side which is surprisingly easy to pick up, I designed a couple of levels within minutes and they were fun to play through with friends (the game supports up to four-player local co-op, which is VERY cool.

The sense of humour that runs through the game works with the Greek theme, Epicus is the main character and has the usual wall climbing, slashing and air-dash abilities you'd expect in a motion-propelled platform game and traversing the game world is fun.
I especially liked the ability to add 'cinematics' and dialogue between the characters to give your own style to the adventures that you create. You can add dozens of traps, pick-ups, golden orbs (the MTOH version of coins) and switch-based puzzles (there's an advanced section of the creation engine that delves deep into more complex puzzles) and you can alter the zone and music to one of the six in-game tracks to suit the mood of your level, whether it be an underwater stage; leaping across crumbling platforms in the sky or a dark dungeon area.

The only thing I noticed that you can't alter at all are the character sprites as well as providing your own music (although the developers are constantly adding tweaks and so this could be changed in the future, although I'm not sure).

You'll see a lot of the functionality here that is in MM from online leader-boards for speedruns to highest voted levels and super-challenging runs that will push your skills and patience to the limit.
Summary
I'm honestly shocked at how fully-fleshed out and well-designed Million to One Hero is, the gameplay is sheer pixelated fun and the creation engine means you can really do a lot with what is on offer.

A great way to dive into making your own levels and if you do, please feel free to share them with me as I really do find the ability to create dialogue and a through-narrative a nice twist on the genre.

Right, I'm off to have an 'Epicus' adventure.
