🕵️‍♂️ Call of Cthulhu - REVIEW - (Nintendo Switch) - "My First First Lovecraft Inspired Game" 🔎 #GameDev #IndieGames

Call Of Cthulu was released last year on PS4, Steam, Xbox One and it's now on my favourite console this month, the Nintendo Switch.

Call Of Cthulu follows the release of another game based on one of Lovecraft stories; The Sinking City which came to the Switch on September 12th 2019.

The stories of H.P. Lovecraft have been in so many different games, they should have a studio based on just Mr Lovecraft's stories!

The video game is an adaption of the role-playing game of the same name as the book from 1981. The role-playing game was actually based on the book sharing the same name that was released in 1926.
Developer: Cyanide Studios
Available on: PS4, XBOX and Nintendo Switch
Played on Nintendo Switch
Price: £35
You play as a Private Detective called Edward Pierce. He suffers from weird and spiritual nightmares. As Edward Pierce, you wake up from these nightmares and not long after this you are given a case.

The case is a suspicious fire, killing a whole family. The only clue is a mysterious painting. You set off to Dark Water, where this took place.

Once there, the mystery's start piling up. Without me spoiling anything for you, just watch out for the picture of yourself!

It's the first Lovecraft inspired game that I've played so I didn't know what to expect. Before I played the game, I didn't know much about Lovecraft and his style of writing.

The game has a great story behind it which makes the game well worth playing. If you are anything like me, you will be trying to get through the game just to know the end of the gripping story.

The core mechanics see you mostly looking for clues, but it also has a survival horror element to it that adds some chilling suspense to the game to keep you invested.
This game has various mechanics but I think it could have done with fewer mechanics and maybe just focused more on the story because it does take a while for the story to start properly.

The voice acting for the game is done quite well with the main character giving you insight into who he is as a person. The music also adds a lot to the atmosphere when things get a little serious and maybe even slightly scary at times.

The story is split into chapters, and I love it when developers do that as it's a great way to break the story up. This is even better as it is based on a book so it feels like you're going through the book chapter by chapter.

It's a good game, although it does have its faults, for example, the loading screens do take a while maybe this is something they can fix in the future, but at the minute it takes too long.

I think it would have benefitted from some more horror elements to make the first couple of hours a little more intense. It starts strong as but then goes a little slow from there onwards.

In the caves and other areas, you feel trapped which makes you feel like you want to get out of there as quickly as possible which adds to the tension.

The game plays with your mind when you’re playing it and that is a tough thing to do in video games.
Summary
Call of Cthulhu has some great elements to it, and its story is great but some of the mechanics let it down slightly.

It’s a great adaptation of the book and the storytelling for this game was excellent and enjoyable it's a shame that some weren't as good as they could have been.
