Ultimate Racing 2D - On Nintendo Switch for around £9
BACK OF THE BOX QUOTE
"Top-Down Gran Turismo”
TYPE OF GAME
Ultimate Racing 2D is a pure retro-inspired top-down racer with plenty of options to tinker with in terms of 45 tracks, 35 classes of car, tyre types and race strategies!
It takes its inspiration from legendary top-down classic games such as Super Sprint, Super Skidmarks, Micro Machines, Rock N Roll Racing and Super Off-Road Racer.
The graphics are minimal flat pixel art style graphics and the emphasis is on progression through your career as you earn more money to drive the better cars in the vehicle classes.
In other words, it’s race-spend-repeat...
What I liked:
  1. The retro pixel art style comes across nicely and hits the mark for the retro style enthusiast.
  2. The sheer amount of options to tinker with are great if a little daunting at first but any petrolhead will enjoy setting the game up just the way they like it
  3. The handling of the cars takes a little getting used to but once you are in the zone the handling is sharp and on point
  4. The sheer variety of vehicle classes is amazing! It’s like the devs have looked at the top-down genre and fused it with the modern racers sheer choices and produced a retro Gran Turismo!
What I disliked:
  1. The game loop does become a bit repetitive as you are grinding out the races to receive funds to buy better cars which will enable you to win the races.
  2. The entry-level cars are impossible to win with so you have to grind out the game in order to succeed so it becomes less about skill and more about time investment and grinding.
  3. The presentation of the game overall is a little bland and repetitive. The same tilesets are used in every country you race in so there is little visual variety. It would appear that the devs made a design call to concentrate on options rather than aesthetic variety and this definitely shows.
  4. The turbo boost didn’t feel spectacularly fast and seemed to have problems enabling you to cut corners over dirt and therefore it took away that tactical element from racing with the boost.
Summary
For £9 you are getting a fun Top-Down Racer that will please people looking for good racing fun at a good price.
It’s a well-made game made with lots of love for the racing genre but lets itself down slightly in the presentation stakes as it becomes repetitive pretty quickly gameplay and visually.
I’d recommend this game to people who love the old top-down racers from the arcades and want a fix of this on the Nintendo Switch

Right, I’m off to race a Forkliftand attempt to drift it around a hairpin bend!
