We took some time out to speak to Nicholas McDonnell who is the Managing Director of Samurai Punk games who have just released their hit PC game Feather on PS4/Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

GF: Who are you and what do you do at Samurai Punk?

My name is Nicholas McDonnell – and I'm the Managing Director at Samurai Punk. On Feather, I was the project lead as well as an artist and programmer.

GF: What consoles and computers did you grow up playing?

I've always played a mix of console and PC games throughout my childhood. I can't actually remember if my first experience was with my Sega Genesis playing Sonic 2 – or if it was playing Command & Conquer: Red Alert on my dad's PC – but those were my first video game memories.

GF: What are your top 3 video games of all time?

Jet Set Radio Future, Mount & Blade: Warband, and The Outer Wilds.

GF: When did you start making video games?

I noodled around with a few things in high school – but it wasn't really until I went to university to study games that I started taking game development seriously.

I worked on a bunch of awful projects at university – but I also participated in a ton of game jams, which were great fun.

After I graduated in 2014, I started Samurai Punk with our co-founder Winston Tang – and we've been making games ever since.

GF: What are your biggest things that you focus on when creating games?

I really obsess over how the player agency can provide people with a focused emotional experience while they play – so when features or content come up, I think about them through that lens.

GF: What developer do you most admire in the video games industry and why?

I'm a big fan of the work of Swery65. His studio White Owls produces really interesting work! I hope he’ll be able to continue after The Good Life comes out.

GF: What video games are you playing right now?

When I get the time, I usually fall back on Rainbow Six Siege or Mount & Blade 2 – but I've managed to play Hypnospace Outlaw, and I also picked up that Mario 3D collection and I'm excited to finally play Super Mario Sunshine!

GF: What type of video game is Feather?

Feather is a relaxing social exploration game.

GF: What is Feather all about?

Feather is about finding a space to chill out, relax, and go your own way.

The game presents players with a world to explore at their own pace.

We intentionally removed distracting extrinsic rewards and goals so that players can set their own ideas and objectives.

GF: When is it due out and what systems will it be available on?

It's now available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC stores (Steam, itch.io, and Humble).

GF: Where can we find out more?
