The first release from Swedish developers Old Apes – who focus on creating co-op games with a broad appeal – Papa’s Quiz is a solid quiz game with a great sense of humour but the rigidity of the inter-round banter is a shame as it makes the proceedings slightly mechanical after a while, although there is a ‘quick game’ option which removes all animations and between-round action, should you prefer.
The game is controlled by tablets or mobile phones, as in Jackbox’ titles, you are directed to a website and have to input a code (or use the camera on a QR code with an iPhone, if you prefer) and can then customise your funky character with different clothing, headwear and facial features as well as giving them a suitably quirky name – naturally, I was ‘Curious Finger’ – which is read out loud by Papa, amusingly.
The game supports up to eight local players, a really nice touch that makes it perfect for larger gatherings but also works just as well with a couple of people due to the standard format.
With its lightly jazzy 90’s morning TV show music and pastel colour palette presented at 60fps, Papa’s Quiz is a really smooth experience. The titular Papa acts as a compere, his text-to-speech style voice with gentle Asian tones keeps the quiz moving along and keeps his contestants dancing.
Yes, dancing is a surprisingly big part of Papa’s Quiz. Between each of the rounds, the winner gets to choose a dance for their character to perform as part of their winning routine. Good.
From the Banana Bounce to the Zombie Zone, you’ll be shaking that booty in front of the other players…if you win, of course...
The rounds range from straight trivia to point-stealing and photo reveals but play out the same each time, meaning that each playthrough has the same format. I was a fan of how the four categories on offer could be switched around and also had ‘junior’ versions featuring simpler questions, perfect for younger players.
