Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Everyone whose opinion I respect heaped praise on Disco Elysium throughout 2020, but with the ‘Final Cut’ edition coming as a free upgrade with full voice acting I decided to wait until its 2021 release. All those garlands were deserved and then some: the quality of the writing puts pretty much every other video game ever made to shame, it’s smart without being pretentious, and ludicrously funny.
It’s mind-boggling that this is ZA/UM’s debut and I really hope they don’t suffer from difficult second album syndrome. Whatever they release next, I’m there day one no questions asked.
Hitman 3
It’s always best to go out on a high and after two-already great entries Hitman 3 perfects IO Interactive’s distinctive social stealth/puzzle-focused action. Each level is an intricately constructed machine that you worm your way into - not to mention that each is a beautiful and varied exhibition of video game architecture. Plus, in an unexpected twist, it finally got to me to care about the overarching story.
I’ve got a tonne of memories wrapped up in this game, though the unquestioned highlight is the jaw-dropping Berlin nightclub level in which the hunters become the hunted. There’s nobody else making games like IO and I can’t wait to see what they do with the James Bond license. Fingers crossed Agent 47 doesn’t stay away for too long though.
Kid A Mnesia Exhibition
Radiohead are at pains to tell you it’s an exhibition and not a video game, but who are they really kidding? I’m a big fan of Kid A and Amnesia, but this still gave me a load of new appreciation for the music, especially the rooms that let you alter and remix the tracks. For a free download, a ridiculous amount of work has gone into it and there’s not a dud moment in the experience.
Makes me wish more musicians would latch onto the idea of album-as-game, though I doubt any copycats would put in the same care and creativity.
