GF APPROVED!

With a wide array of gaming chairs, the GT Racing / GT Player brand has been making an impact on their customers over the last couple of years; with prominent YouTubers and Esports teams using and promoting them (in November, GT Racing announced a partnership with the Manchester City Esports team).

When they came onto my radar, the look, design, and capabilities of the chairs seemed like they were perhaps overstated somewhat in comparison to their price bracket, which is extremely reasonable. I’m pleased to say, however – after using the GT890MF for at least ten hours a day for well over a week, they really do deliver the goods.

The chair I was sent to review was the GT890MF (blue) which is part of their ‘Music Series’ of chairs. The main differentiating factor to the other GT Players range being the dual Bluetooth speakers mounted on the rear shoulders of the chair - and in the case of the specific version I have, there’s also a pull-out footrest to get especially comfortable… and possibly doze off after a lengthy gaming session.

I use the chair for both office work and gaming, which takes up around ten-twelve hours of my day in total -and so, comfort and flexibility were absolutely at the top of my own list of requirements in terms of importance – again, points on which the chair certainly delivered.

Upon arrival, the chair needs to be put together. I was initially apprehensive as I am not known for my DIY prowess, and the - oddly robust and laminated – instruction booklet stated that it would take 45 minutes with two people. Naturally, I was keen and took it upon myself to construct alone, a process which was very straightforward and completed in under an hour – everything that you need is included in the pack.

There’s a lot of flexibility in the chair and it’s comfortable straight off the bat, but the included neck/head and lumbar/back cushions are easy to attach and remove, giving extra support where required. I use the lumbar support when typing for extended periods and remove it whilst gaming, for example. You can also raise/lower the armrests as well as ‘click’ them to be straight, inward, or outward-facing - depending on your personal preference.

The back of the chair can be reclined to an almost horizontal position (for a nap, or perhaps if your television is on the ceiling) and is controlled by a lever on the right-hand side of the chair, which has a smooth action. In fact, in putting the chair together by myself allowed me to get a good look at the individual parts and mechanics and I was impressed with the build quality. Nothing felt cheap and the packaging and included pieces – including some extra parts and Hex keys provided everything you needed to get going.

It was good to know that the chair was made of solid parts as they are designed to be usable for people up to 300lb in weight. I’m 5’9 and there is plenty of room to get cosy and lots of support on your neck, back and thighs etc. due to the high-density foam and PU leather upholstery. I’ve also read reports on people up to 6’2 using the chair comfortably, although I can’t personally comment in that regard.

In terms of the Bluetooth speakers included, although there isn’t a subwoofer to bring out the low-end; I was quite impressed with the clarity and stereo separation whilst listening to various genres (I listened to podcasts, The Beatles, Recluse, Van Morrison, jazz and synth-wave). It would be easy for some cheap speakers to be put in that distort at volume or seem reedy, but as long as you aren’t after hefty, bass-driven tracks – they work surprisingly well. The Bluetooth lasts around 5-6 hours when charged (a process that takes a couple of hours), although there is a 3.5mm jack extension cable to plug straight into your phone etc. without worrying about the charging situation. I now use it to listen to podcasts and music as it’s easy to reach around the back of the chair into the pouch that holds the Bluetooth box and flick it on, a neat little feature that again impresses at this price point, especially as the Bluetooth link is clear and strong up to 5 metres in range; and you realistically aren’t going to be further away than that if you are using the chair speakers for your music.
