It’s been a while since I used wired earphones/earbuds and – whilst the £19.99 RRP is fair, the Roccat Syn Buds Core highlight why I moved away from in-ear, noise-cancelling buds and towards over-ear / wireless versions. That said, these proved to be at their best when gaming whilst in a sedentary position.
As stated above, the Roccat Syn Buds Core come with on-wire controls and their own cloth case, very cool to include in your Switch case or to throw in your pocket as protection when on the move or possibly commuting through public transport.
Before diving into the review proper, I again repeat that the £19.99 price point feels well-judged and the highlighting by Roccat that the buds are Switch ready highlights their best features, when using them for gaming or stationary purposes, the Syn Buds Core were on point at delivering the goods, with in-game audio – at all volume levels – sounding clear and all-encompassing.
If you are thinking of using the Roccat Syn Buds Core beyond the recommended stationary 3.5mm jack connectivity, however, issues begin to rise. Firstly, I found that they are very bass-driven and so work best with electronic / chip-tune / synthwave music.
The buds focus so much on the bass that there is an overall lack of clarity in the high end of the audio spectrum and so more organically-driven music such as rock or jazz really suffers due to this regard when it’s not perfectly sculptured sampling.
The physical design also doesn’t lend itself well to movement, I tried using the buds when walking to work and found myself fidgeting with them on the walk-in for the entire duration – but then being absolutely fine with them whilst sitting at my desk.
My partner – who has distinctly smaller ears than myself -and so utilised the smaller silicone ear tips – also found that they were comfortable and practical when sitting and gaming, but required constant re-manoeuvring when in motion, and also found that the square-shaped design and subsequent weighting was an issue, possibly something that a clip-on attachment could solve?
