If you loved the original SNES games then you'll adore this!
Pocky and Rocky Reshrined sits somewhere between a sequel and a remaster. With the opening stages being a re-run of the original SNES games and only as you progress through the levels does it then deviate to a different and even confusing new story. To be fair to the game beyond those early levels this is definitely a NEW Pocky & Rocky game and maybe those early levels were in there to get the nostalgia glands flowing with nostalgia juice before the new stuff kicks in.
One initial grating issue with this 21st Century Pocky & Rocky game is that the essential couch co-op mode is well and truly locked behind having to fully complete the game in order to open it! For me, that is most definitely the biggest appeal to be able to play this game in co-op mode with my kids and let them experience this piece of awesomeness with them. There is actually a way to open up the co-op by collecting a ridiculous amount of coins (10,000) but that would probably take longer than just bashing your way through the game to see the end credits if I'm honest.
Something tells me that there's nothing enchanting about this forest... |
This game is an absolute beauty to look at and feels like it's been delicately lifted from the 16 Bit Era and had its edges smoothed down and then it has been exquisitely place up on a pixel plinth for all to behold its natural beauty. I was in love with the pixel art from minute one with all those ancient Japanese-inspired backgrounds and enemies making for a varied set of enemies and a really enjoyable playthrough.
For me, this game is all new as I never experienced the beautiful original games and therefore I was a little shocked at how crap I was at the game when I first picked up the controller. The thing is that it's so much fun to play it just made me want to play more even after getting battered on numerous occasions by early mini-bosses that seemed to revel in my mediocrity.
At first, the combat had me stumped as I wasn't actually too sure of how I should be playing as I thought my defensive move which wallops projectiles back at enemies was just a close-up melee attack. Once that penny dropped for me I was all in on this little beauty and my trousers flew off at a velocity last witnessed at a Full Monty reunion.
