Remote Life is a classic side-scrolling shoot 'em up. Think of an updated version of R-Type and then some. Despite having an oddly forgettable name, Remote life is actually a cracking old-school shooter with super tight levels and great visuals that will appeal to all shmup heads out there who love a good ol' challenge.

As usual, the plot revolves around an alien life form that is detected piloting a massive ship that chews up everything in its path and is set on a collision course with earth in just two months' time! Enter our hero who will pilot a ship within the mother ship to destroy the threat before it strikes the earth.

Remote Life (which sounds like an Insurance Company name) uses the classic shmup gameplay formula to great effect but with some lovely twists such as controlling support fire turrets and 360-degree rotational shooting on the ship you pilot and the turrets you take control of too.

The game throws up stacks of weapon variations along with a load of ugly enemies to take on which take the form of robotic space-type bugs that can one-touch kill you at a moment's notice.

Working through the game's missions is a pleasure as there is even good variety to those so you won't be getting bored any time soon as you meticulously plan your way through levels whilst trying not to take damage and ultimately saving our beloved earth.

The graphical look of this game is uniquely styled for a shoot-em-up as it really goes to town with the level of detail that is employed to the backgrounds, the ships and the enemies. It's a visual treat, to say the least, and really draws you in when you boot it up.

Once you've finished looking at how pretty the game is and how well presented it is you will get to a thumping soundtrack that really drives you forwards in your attempts to save the earth.

The gameplay is truly uncompromising and ultimately it's tough as old nails as you will die again and again while you're trying to get used to juggling weapons and fire directions and all the while being under threat from a one-shot kill. Sometimes it gets super frustrating as you take a hit from a slow-moving shot that you didn't notice because you were trying to negotiate a trap, an enemy, a new weapon and a piece of background that needed destroying before it destroyed you.

Overall, Remote Life is a classic shoot-em-up game that lands nicely onto the Nintendo Switch after being over on PC for the last few years. It's garnered plenty of great reviews over the years and now we have it on Switch I'd say it has found its spiritual home.
Right, I'm off to be inserted into the mother ship and save the world!
