The 6 Best Games That I’ve played in 2022 By Transvaal πŸ† #GOTY

#6 Primordia

Starting off with a game that I still think about often, I really found the world of Primordia an interesting one, a world of machinery with only the remnants of human life, the world is decaying and has very little life left in it. The story is a very simple one, with protagonist Horatio trying to get his stolen power core back, it’s a story that does spiral outwards, and has some very interesting twists and turns. The one criticism I’ve seen a levelled at Primordia is the character Crispin being irritating for some, but I personally found his back-and-forth with Horatio one of the best bits in the game.

#5 The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me / The Quarry

I’ve put these two together as they both really impressed me this year, and I thought I would celebrate both. Supermassive Games has hit a great stride after last year’s House of Ashes, and these latest entries have followed suit with some great ideas and more interesting storytelling - the future looks bright! I found The Quarry had the more interesting characters, but The Devil in Me had the better scares. Plus, any game that pays homage to the Saw franchise will win me straight over.

#4 The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow

I went into Hobs Barrow with very little knowledge of what the game was about, so I had a wonderful surprise - it’s an amazing little gothic horror game with a genuine intrigue that keeps you hooked for the entire game. Thomasina is a genuinely likeable character and very easy to root for, the town is wonderfully designed and is filled with some very interesting townsfolk. The game has some great, more subtle horror moments, and some... not so subtle. The ending is genuinely amazing and still sticks with me.

#3 Burnhouse Lane

The Cat Lady is one of my favourite horror games of all time, and Harvester Games have yet to put out a bad game in my opinion - so I had high hopes. Well... they still haven’t made a bad game, Burnhouse Lane continues to layer on more wonderful stories with great characters and deep storytelling, the game juggles a lot of very deep topics, but always treats them with respect. The killers in this one are memorable and horrifying, but I think the true stars in the game are the supporting cast, who are wonderfully acted and full of character. I loved them all, but especially George, what a lovely, and affable man.

#2 Lacuna

If this was a ‘best soundtrack’ list, then Lacuna would win it. Its jazz/synth soundtrack might be my favourite of all time (I listen to it frequently), but it’s not quite enough to grab my top spot. Lacuna was a fantastic game that managed to present the point-and-click adventure in a new way while keeping all that makes the genre so wonderful. You play a burnt-out cop who gets embroiled in a murder conspiracy, you smoke, solve mysteries, and listen to some smooth jazz/synth. It’s brilliant.

#1 Unavowed

This game managed to knock the great Secret of Monkey Island off my top spot of ‘best adventure game’, that’s right - I love it that much, it basically does everything right - a marvellous cast of characters all with such interesting back stories, a cool New York backdrop, a gripping story that has one of the best twists in gaming. It’s an amazing game that I hold with the highest regard... It’s simply the best.
