I’m a big fan of smaller-sized keyboards and mice, especially in the current climate of the hybrid working model, where carting around a full-sized keyboard along with a laptop can be a pain, and whilst the Trust Lyra desktop set is easily among the most compact and practical keyboards I’ve come across, there are so many other nice touches in terms of design, features and accessibility that– especially at this price point- it makes the Trust Lyra stand out in the crowd.
Designed in traditional black, the sleek and practical design of the keyboard belies the myriad of functions available, one of which allows the user to operate up to three separate connections at once, which can be toggled between through a set of buttons that sit the top-left of the keyboard and below the scroll-wheel on the mouse.
Using these, you can set up two Bluetooth connections as well as use the included USB dongle, this allows you to switch between separate laptops, mobile devices, tablets etc. without having to constantly set up and re-connect through the Bluetooth apps of each device, perfect for when you have multiple systems at your workspace – or multiple users of said workspace.
The more environmentally conscious part of me was also very impressed when I noticed that the keyboard and mouse are comprised of 84% recycled plastics, and came packaged in 100% plastic-free packaging, non-recyclable packaging, and also over-packaging really gets on my John Wick, so this was nice to know.
The Trust Lyra also features rechargeable batteries – charged via a USB-C cable, included – and the zero-to-full charge is within two hours, and due to the lack of any flashiness or RGB lighting on the accessories, means that they can last up to six months on a single charge, with regular usage. This is perfect for someone like me, who has numerous peripherals spotted around, the longer the charge, the less I have to fiddle around with cables, and the happier I am. I can cope with a single cable being plugged in twice a year for a couple of hours!
In addition to the multiple connections on offer through USB dongle and Bluetooth, the Trust Lyra also features the ability to quickly switch between iOS, Windows, Android and macOS thanks to keyboard shortcuts – as well as media and hotkeys that can be customised and utilised depending on your personal preference.
The ambidextrous Lyra mouse is also extremely smooth (something that was especially noticeable when I switched over from my usual office mouse) and has an adjustable cursor speed between 800-1600 DPI, although the one niggle that I did have was the tablet-like mouse design is quite flat to the desk, and the lack of an arch to the back of the mouse – whilst great for portability – means that I can imagine a lot of users (myself included) will require a wrist rest to use the mouse comfortability over long periods.
In terms of the keyboard, however, the action of the keys, spacing, robustness and angle offered when the rubber-tipped feet are brought into play felt nothing but practical and comfortable, absolutely no issues there.
SUMMARY
There’s a lot to enjoy here, especially in terms of the practicality of the design, solid build and longevity, but be prepared to pick up a wrist rest for longer periods of mouse usage.
