All of the tunes are taken from the games you would expect to see: the original Super Mario World and its sequel Yoshi’s Island (this latter represented on six of the 11 tracks), along with a few from Yoshi’s Story and a couple from other Mario games.
They all have a few things in common: a slowed-down tempo and gentle beats yet still carry the melodies we all know.
Side A starts with the title themes from Yoshi’s Island and Story Before the Ground Theme from SMW makes an unexpected appearance. Go and listen to it now, then try and imagine how you could slow the frantic pace down to 87 bpm. Difficult to picture, but this one really works: it’s proper summer cocktail-and-hammock material.
Obstacle Course and Middle Boss from Yoshi’s Island come up next, the former with a lovely groove, before we finish up side 1 with the woodblock-driven title theme from New Super Mario Brothers: Wii.
Side B serves up more of the same, with Flower Garden and the lullabyesque Story Music Box from Yoshi’s Island followed by the Harry Hosono-sounding Yoshis On The Beach from Yoshi’s Story.
Next up is the final Yoshi’s Island track, the Underground theme, which is really reminiscent of Nobuo Uematsu’s quieter moments from the Final Fantasy series, and the album rounds off with a reggae-style bass-heavy take on Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine.
SUMMARY
If you’re a fan of lo-fi adaptations then this is definitely one for you. Perfect for a sunny Sunday while soaking up some rays (slathered in factor 50, of course).
