Sometimes I’m very much in the mood for escape room games – and even hidden object adventures, if things get crazy – and so the chance to dive into How 2 Escape, the upcoming co-op room escape game from developer Breakfirst via publisher Just For Games got my trousers in a right old twist!

As mentioned above, this is a co-op title – one player on the PC / console and the other either on PC or mobile using the How 2 Escape companion app.

The materials that I received with the game suggested that the player using the companion app doesn’t look at the screen for an added challenge, but in practice, this was quite tedious for that person, as most of the action takes place on the main console and when both get involved, whilst it certainly makes things easier overall, it does mean that both players are engaged for the duration of the game. 

As this is a preview article and I don’t want to give away the narrative or puzzles, I’ll just say that How 2 Escape features siblings, of which one is in a spot of bother and the other must assist. The visuals are wonderfully smooth and cel-shaded, with the Switch version that we played running pretty tastily. The voice-acting and audio helped immerse us in the experience, and the puzzles and progression were fun to work through and satisfying when solved. 

Absolutely one for the puzzle-heads out there and certainly fun to play in co-op. Although, from the build that we’ve seen, don’t be off-put by the co-op aspect, as you can play through this in single-player mode if needs be, as the secondary input is more of a companion piece as opposed to the ‘required’ multiplayer in titles such as the ‘We Were Here…’ series.

How 2 Escape has a 31st August 2023 release date and it’s shaping up to be a great escape room game!
