My esteemed colleague Pixel Hunted covered Sephonie upon its PC release last year and quite frankly, I’ve been furiously jealous of him ever since. I’ve recently had the pleasure of playing the newly released console version on Switch, in hands trembling with excitement…and possibly unbridled passion.

The developers’ previous game – Anodyne 2 – was my game of the year in 2021 and I’ve been waiting to get my hands on Sephonie since it was first announced, I admittedly had high expectations, knowing what gold the devs were capable of.

I’m here to pretty much echo the sentiments of Pixel Hunted, as he nailed the game in his original coverage back in May 2022, Sephonie is a fantastic 3D platformer created – astonishingly – by a 2-person dev team, a duo that has – once again – managed to meld genres, in this instance the genres of tile-based puzzling and 3D platforming to create a fully realised world rich with lore in that distinctive Analgesic style.

I’d also like to call attention to Melos Han-Tani’s gorgeous score, which has a richer sonic palette than the one used in Anodyne 2, but still manages to retain that innate sense of simplistic melody and sense of ambience that I find so extraordinary – As with Anodyne 2, this will hopefully get a well-deserved vinyl release.

Playing on Switch has been great, as I find Sephonie to be a perfect ‘end of evening’ game. To get comfortable in bed and pop this on – in handheld mode - for half an hour as I wind down is a pleasure, and as Sephonie runs so well on Switch, I can only assume that it runs just as smoothly on the other, more powerful consoles.

Analgesic Productions create worlds that are a pleasure to dive into, and the easy-going approach here, combined with the accessible controls and design means that this is a game that will appeal to a lot of lovers of the platforming genre.

SUMMARY

Perhaps some players won’t resonate with certain aspects of the narrative – but there’s so much here to get lost in and enjoy, that the heart of the design and atmosphere is what will draw you in, another corker from Analgesic Productions!
