After our usual trawl through Twitter we stumbled upon a game called Spilled which has been made by a a solo indie game developer called Lente. Lente is dutch and lives on a boat and has been making games since 2015 as a hobby.
At the end of 2022, she dropped out of college for the second time and decided to finally start her long time dream of becoming an independent creative.
At that time Lente also bought her own boat to live on. She grew up on a ship and it's always stayed with her. Lente and her mum have renovated the boat together and she's happy with how it's turned out.
From that point on Lente started working on her first serious project; Spilled! A cosy game about cleaning up oil spills with a boat.
Lente started posting to Twitter and quickly found a great community of friends, which has never stopped growing.
So far, she has managed to build a community with over 11,000 people on Twitter alone and over the last few days she has launched her very first Kickstarter campaign for Spilled which was funded in half a day!
We asked Lente if she would answer a few questions about herself and her game Spilled and this is what our new friend came back with...
Who are you and what do you do? I am Lente, I live on a boat in The Netherlands, and I make games! I'm currently working on an eco-conscious game called 'Spilled!' - it's a relaxing and satisfying game in which you clean up oil spills!
What's your earliest video gaming memory? I grew up on a ship. For a while we didn’t have wired electricity and had to use a generator on land when we did need it for washing for instance. During these times, my brother and I would play flash games on our parents laptop! It’s here that I got the introduction!
What was the first video game console that you owned? A PS1! My parents got it from friends, whose kids didn't need it anymore or got a newer system. My parents were tight on money, My brother and I have never missed anything and were very happy with the PlayStation 1!
How did you get into the Game Dev scene? It’s not quite that I wanted to make games right from when I was playing those flash games, as I was quite young. But the interest stuck, and I grew up to have an interest in computers and programming games!
What was the first video game that you made? A simple 'Clicker' game in Python, where you'd press enter to get money, and type a command to buy upgrades. I really liked Clicker games and still do :)
What's your favourite video game of all time? That's a tough one. I'd have to go with Minecraft for all the amazing memories I've had there with friends. I don't think any other game can beat that for me.
What's your favourite console of all time? I've never been big on consoles! Always gamed on laptops and later built my own PC. I really liked the Wii, playing at friends houses and actually being active :)
What's your favourite arcade game of all time? I haven't played enough arcade games to give a good answer here!
What's your favourite sandwich? I like a grilled cheese sandwich.
What's your favourite cuisine + Your Favourite Dish From That Cuisine? I suppose I like Italian cuisine. I mostly make pastas and I love pizzas, especially real Italian ones! :)
What's your favourite drink? (alcoholic or soft drink) Water. But I have a sweet tooth too, so I like cola for instance, occasionally. But mostly water!
What current-generation video games do you play the most? I don't really play many games at the moment. I'm trying to get back into it! But I really like shooter games like Counter-Strike or Call of Duty.
Who's your favourite person to follow on Twitter? There's so many amazing indie developers making really creative things. I can't choose!
What's your favourite video game genre? FPS shooters!
If you were a console, which one would you be and why? uhhh the Wii as it seems fun!
Can you recommend a good video gaming shop in your area? I can't.
If you were going to do a Cosplay tomorrow, what would it be and why? As I said, I'm not a huge gamer at the moment unfortunately. Is there a female Solid Snake?
We love the look of your awesome new video game that is currently on Steam to Wishlist and is also on Kickstarter, can you tell us how the game came about and what the inspiration was for creating this awesome retro looking title was? Spilled! started out as a school project! We had to make a game for the Raspberry Pi, and I figured a pixel-art 3D style could work nicely with the limited resources on the machine! The school wasn't the best fit for me eventually, but I did get the idea of Spilled! - which I continued on full time!
Where do our readers need to go to get involved with the world of Lente?
