Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III Xbox Review 8/10 "Twirl that parasol!" ⛱️ #Retrogaming

Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III Xbox Review 8/10
Released by Taito in 1991, Parasol Stars - the sequel to Bubble Bobble (1986), and Rainbow Islands (1987)– stuck closer to the formula of the original with single-screen action, this time with brighter visuals, larger sprites, and advanced audio – and yes, the soundtrack is absolutely as much of an earworm as the original!

Parasol Stars continues the adventures of Bubby and Bobby, this time arming them with that most deadly of weapons…the parasol. It’s a handy melee weapon, though – as not only can you thwart enemies by twirling it at them, but you can catch droplets, and also use it as a parachute to slow your descent whilst jumping – not to mention imbuing it with various elemental boosts that can be picked up in each stage.

There’s a strong vibe of innocent fun here as you make your way through the distinct worlds, defeating bosses, whistling along to the incredibly upbeat music, and working in tandem with a  friend in co-op mode.

The fact that this evolves a lot of the themes and ideas from the original, leaving out the slightly different approach in Rainbow Islands, means that this feels more timeless and charming, resulting in a blast of accessible arcade action that still feels fun today.

Also, due to better design, it doesn’t resort to dastardly level design in the latter stages, where you almost have to rely on glitches and bus to proceed, yes…I know your game, Bubble Bobble!
