Mika and the Witch’s Mountain Nintendo Switch PC Review 6.5/10 "A Delivery Service game lacking magic" 🧙‍♀️🧹📦 #MikaandTheWitchsMountain #IndieGame #GameDev @chibigstudio

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain Nintendo Switch PC Review
A game that admirably smashed its Kickstarter target unfortunately feels a little light on its release, with a gameplay loop that feels like it needs more variety to keep players captivated.

Beginning with an amusing introduction whereby beginner-witch Mika arrives at the top of the titular Witch’s Mountain for tutelage before promptly getting booted off a cliff by her very teacher!

Breaking her broomstick in the fall – and luckily, nothing else – she befriends some of the townsfolk whilst bagging a job as a courier for the colourful island community in order to raise money to get a cool enough broom to get back to the top of the mountain, and hopefully tell the Witch to not boot her off the cliff this time, and instead perhaps get the spell books out.

Presented with a cel-shaded visual style and absolutely glorious feel-good music that is breezier than the winds that carry you on your broomstick, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain makes a great first impression.

Running at a mostly solid 30fps, the bright and sun-drenched island that you will spend the game pottering around and making deliveries on is fun to explore, with scattered pick-ups and collectibles acting as a mild diversion.

There are a small cast of colourful characters, and the traversal is mostly fun, although you do find yourself revisiting the same places over and over. With no health bar or way to fail – any botched deliveries can just be instantly restarted – combined with the style of dialogue used makes it clear that this is a game aimed at a younger audience, and whilst it is fun for a couple of hours, even though it’s a short game (5-6 hours in total), there wasn’t enough meat on the bones to really hold my attention, and I found myself dipping in and out as opposed to fancying playing for a few hours at a time.

SUMMARY
Whilst the presentation is there – aside from some jerkier moments in the visuals – the initial pull of traversal and exploration fades as the reception of delivering parcels – often to the same people – had me wishing that something would happen in the second half of the proceedings to spice things up.

A fun one to play with your kids, but not one that managed to fully entice me in.
