Nintendo Switch REMATCH GLOW Wireless Controller: Boo Hoo
I’ve covered a fair few controllers for the Nintendo Switch here at GF, and I find myself rotating between a few old favourites every now and again, but the arrival of the Boo Hoo controller has thrown things into disarray here at the Welsh branch of GF HQ, and I found myself becoming quite entranced with it during usage, and it has now become my ‘go to’ controller when gaming on the Switch.

First things first, this is a beautifully designed controller, from the huge Boo image on the fascia through to the myriad glow-in-the-dark ‘mini Boos’ that cover the entire front. The fact that this is officially licenced definitely shines through in the quality, presentation and feel of the controller, with a richly textured rubber grip making the controller feel part of your being as you dive into your gaming. Each button and trigger feels robust and ‘definite’ upon usage, with the ridging around the edging of the thumb sticks ensuring that this controller isn’t going anywhere.

The battery life holds up extremely well, and I was able to comfortably game pretty much all day recently when the controller was fully charged, and there’s also a decent length of time given as a warning when the battery begins to get low and require charging, unlike a couple of the others I’ve covered in the past, where the ‘low battery’ pop-up will show on screen, with the controller disconnecting nanoseconds later. Speaking of charging, the included cable is only a short one – a foot long - so you may need a lengthier cable to hand if you wish to charge as you play – although if you are like me, you’ll have several hundred USB-C cables to choose from, scattered in the various cupboards and drawers around your home.

One aspect of the Boo Hoo that may be an issue to some is the fact that there is no rumble function present here, although it’s not an issue for me personally as I only tend to require the rumble function on FPS titles and simulation-based racing games - neither of which I really play on Switch - and the trade-off for a much longer battery is definitely much more my scene on Nintendo’s system. I was also impressed with the snappiness of the response times and connection to the console, the speed of charging and linking with the Switch really gave me a sense of reliability, and lastability (definitely a word, don’t look it up).

So, the controller looks great, feels great, is well-built, and has a tasty battery life…so how does the glow in the dark feature fare? Weeeeeeell, I have to admit that it wasn’t as great as I’d hoped. Admittedly I live in Wales, where the sun is a long-lost god that we hungrily  read about in forgotten, crumbling texts found in buried temples, but still; even when I’d laid the controller on the table in direct sunlight for a few hours and then knocked all the lights off in my kitchen to see how bright the effect was, it was still more of a lightly warm glow than a bright illumination, which I was quite looking forward to for the novelty aspect of it.

SUMMARY

In summary, whilst the illumination isn’t as cool and funky as it could be, the controller is extremely tasty in every other aspect, and has very much become the controller I reach for when I play Switch. Unfortunately, my son feels the same way, so it’ll be a case of who gets to it first for those multiplayer sessions!
