The premise of an anarchic Looney Tunes sports collection felt oddly nostalgic, and I was quite keen to dive into the game in multiplayer at home, as we are all familiar with the characters, and as the game supports up to four players locally, numbers wouldn’t be an issue. Whilst the visuals, characters and functionality is there, the games all feel a little too flat to be a recommendation, unfortunately.
There are four sports on offer here; football, golf (the one I was most keen for!), tennis, and basketball. A nice mix, and each is fully-fledged in their own right, with jaunty music, colourful characters, and a pick-up-and-play vibe.
I popped on golf first, and whilst it initially looked great, the ‘feel’ just wasn’t there, with the courses, physics and gameplay feeling oddly tedious and functional alongside such zany characters, it was quite the juxtaposition. This was also the case for basketball, with football and especially tennis standing out as being much more instant and fun to play, with the speed of play and the character-specific special moves hitting the mark for the kind of approach that the other included sports should have taken. After a while, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it felt like Looney Tunes Wacky World of Sports was a remaster of a PS2 game, with more zing in the visuals and audio, but the gameplay left feeling untouched and sadly dated.
With a multitude of familiar faces from the Looney Tunes vaults – each with their own set of stats and special moves in each event – Looney Tunes Wacky World of Sports hits the mark with crisp visuals and smooth animation, it’s a game that looks great when captured in screenshots and on video, but the true issues lay in how the game plays.
SUMMARY
Considering that Looney Tunes are known for being...well, loony – there’s an oddly flat sense to a lot of the gameplay that lacks dynamism and it impacts the game far too much for this to be a recommended game for anyone aside from die-hard Looney Tunes fans.
You’ll be entertained for a while, but the pull of the gameplay isn’t there for the long haul.
