Retrosouls’ Old Towers is next up in my Mega Drive Odyssey, and it’s one that my three-year old gravitated to as I was playing through each game, showing that awesome puzzle titles are ageless!
As with Mega Cat Studios other titles, the Mega Drive case is branded with their logo which really is a nice touch as it makes them stand out and feel that little bit extra special. The cover image is of the main character moving at speed towards a golden coin, as if he’s hurtling out of the image itself, with the background featuring heavy motion blur to give that sense of pace. The spine is also uniform and matches up perfectly with other MCS releases whilst the rear sums up the gameplay in a succinct paragraph as some additional quotes hammer home that this is an addictive puzzle-based title, along with some screenshots.
A one-player game, Old Towers instantly hit me with a very full-on vibe when I realised that the music throughout the game was a 16-bit version of Popcorn by Gershon Kingsley. GOOD. This intense, looping soundtrack gives the exact same ‘one more go’ feel as the Bubble Bobble theme and is the perfect partner to the ever-increasing challenge of Old Towers, awesome stuff.
The gameplay of Old Towers is based around movement, your character – eventually ‘characters’ – can zip around the stages in straight lines, meaning that you must either use the environment, timed-puzzle features, or another character as a sort of stopgap for your traversal.
In order to move to the next stage, you must collect all the coins in each area, and finally - reach the teleporter. In a really nice touch, as you head up the tower, you can see the borders of the previous / next stage both above and below you that adds a subtle sense of uniformity to the tower as you rise through it.
SUMMARY
It’s a pacey and energetic game that has the music to match, and is another example of Mega Cat Studios finding the perfect niche for the MD library in terms of genres that it lacks. Much as L’Abbaye des Morts fills the void of vintage 2D platformers with a spooky vibe, Old Towers gives the puzzle genre a burst of vibrancy and instancy, with extra hot buttery popcorn!
