PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller – Fortnite Sticker Mania Review By Britt 🎮 #Retrogaming

The first PowerA controller for Switch that we’ve covered here at GF – although we have covered PowerA Xbox controllers previously (PowerA Core Blush, PowerA Fortnite Midas) – and it’s been an instant hit in our household, with my son especially gravitating towards it over the other controllers available, which is always a good sign! He has been officially named it “My Sticker ‘troller”

Right out of the box, the PowerA Sticker Mania makes a fantastic first impression, the light shade of blue that acts as the base colour of the controller and the myriad of ‘stickers’ that cover the front plate instantly put your mind in the gear of play time. I’ve played Fortnite in the past, but I’m more familiar with it via younger family members etc. but even so, the artwork used is universally funky, with fish-faced cartoon grenades, charging skeletons, happy-face pink dice and the like scattered across its visage– it’s a burst of colour and creativity that often had me checking out the artwork during loading screens and boot-up procedures.

It looks great, but how is it in use? Well, first off they aren’t telling porkies about the battery life, as it has had a hammering over the last week, mainly via Lego City Undercover and the very festive Ebenezer and The Invisible World, and it really does hold its own in that department. Naturally, it’s hard to comment on the long term battery life in reviews such as this, but we will update the article if anything occurs in the near future. 

The feel of the controller in terms of the buttons, triggers, D-pad and thumbsticks isn’t dissimilar to the PDP Rematch Glow Boo Hoo, although the Fortnite Sticker Mania has a slightly more definite ‘press’, and smaller surface area when it comes to the main X,A,Y,B buttons. Also, the edge of the thumbsticks aren’t ridged here, resulting in a smoother feel. The one major difference between this and some other controllers I’ve used on the Switch this year is that it feels chunkier in the hand – the same weight as others, but there’s a definite phatness to the handles that sit in your palms that make it feel like it’s a meaty one!

The additional feature buttons on the rear also have that satisfying Sega Saturn controller shoulder button ‘click’ and can be mapped as the player wishes. The included 3m charging cable is  generous in terms of length and will suit all but the most spacious living areas. 

These are officially licensed, and come with a two-year warranty, so it’s clear that PowerA have faith in their products, and they are built for heavy usage, regardless of how cute they appear, this is a rugged number ready for action...or visual novels, if that’s your scene.

SUMMARY

In summary, the PowerA Fortnite Sticker Mania is now one of the two main controllers we use here at the Welsh branch of GF, and the combination of visual appeal, response time, feel in the hand, and robustness – my son is three, so believe me when I say he has ‘tested’ it’s sturdiness on our hard, wooden floor – results in a controller that very much gets a big thumbs-up from us here at GF, and would make an awesome Christmas gift for the Fortnite player in your life, and believe me – there is one.
