A simple, accessible game, Burger Race allows for up to four players – in split screen – to select from a range of fast food items on wheels (or rather, cucumbers and tomatoes) and race around the nine tracks on offer, picking up the various boosts and weapon pick-ups scattered around the circuits en route. As mentioned above, this is very much in the style of Mario Kart. You can select from a range of burgers – with a vegetarian option, natch – as well as a milkshake, fries, salad and hot dog, each with their own balance of acceleration, top speed and handling.
The visuals are colourful, rounded and crisp, much in the same way as Sugoroku Casino Party, which does give a sense of visual identity to the Sat-Box brand.
The music is suitably energetic as you whizz around the tracks – all of which are set within a retro American-styled diner, you’ll squirt your opponents with ketchup, slip on (cheekily placed!) mustard, and try to run your opponents off the track as you drift around corners and boost your way to victory on the pacey and punchy tracks on offer.I could nitpick at little things such as the inability to customise your ride, the simplicity of the tracks on offer and the lack of unlockables, but the truth is - this is a fun little racer that has a charming identity, is pure pick up ‘n play, and runs smoothly for up to four players, all for well under five quid.
I’ve reviewed games that are seven or eight times the price of Burger Race, and don’t have the presentation, accessibility, design nous, charm or smoothness of this one.
SUMMARY
Yes, this is a game that you’ll dip in and out of for quick sessions, but what did you expect from a fast food racer?!
The only left to do now is buy it...do you want fries with that?
