A game for up to six players, Sugoroku Casino Party is a bright and vibrant digital board game set in a casino world. There are quite a few options to get your setup just right, such as number of players, bots, length of the games themselves – with a save mechanic - and the chance to tackle each mini-game separately if you so wish. You can also lightly customise your in-game avatar with uniforms and colours to add some personality to your little plain board game piece. As you make your way around the board – by rolling double dice – you’ll land on event spots, random win / loss pots, card shops, and solo or group mini-games. In these mini-games, you can gamble your chips in a bid to raise your overall treasury in games such as high/low, poker, horse racing, chicken, flash card and several others. These are really the heart and soul of the game as it’s where the real competition and high stakes lie.
The aim of the game is to end up with as many casino chips as possible, and so it’s up to you how confident you feel in each mini-game round, and how many chips you put up for risk. It’s a simple setup that is incredibly fun in practise, as hoards of chips can be lost and won in a matter of minutes, with the in-game bonus cards mixing things up even further, allowing you to slow down other players, swap positions, steal and destroy cards as well as various other abilities as you make your way around the board.
The sheer random factor means that the leader is constantly shifting throughout play, and even on the podium various bonuses are allocated and awarded meaning that the true winner can always be a surprise!
Assisting the well-designed game premise is the overall presentation around the gameplay. The game runs incredibly smoothly, and features a plethora of casino-based colour schemes and items scattered around, accompanied by a jaunty light-jazz musical score, enhancing the overall vibe perfectly.SUMMARY
A great party game that is suitable for all the family, Sugoroku Casino Party is a fun, well-designed experience that I can imagine will be at home on my Switch for quite some time!
