Westerns and gaming go together like bourbon and gherkin juice – perfectly well. The rootin’-tootin’ wild west is ripe for gun play, gals n’ galoshes, so whenever a Western-themed title tips its hat at me as it mosies on into the saloon, I’m more than happy to challenge it to a duel at high noon.
Priced extremely fairly, Westild’s law is a top-down shooter that casts you in the role of a male or female bounty hunter (the gender can be changed at any time) as they take on bounties from the Westild town sheriff, all the while upgrading their abilities, guns, and skills.
Presented with pixel art visuals and a suitably dusty, guitar-led soundtrack in a style not dissimilar to the always-wonderful West of Loathing, Westild’s Law has a simple core gameplay loop that is perfect for quick blasts.
The bounties you take on will alternate between protecting a crate load of dynamite in the town square as enemies spawn and try to take both it and you out, racing along a path on horseback whilst taking out bad guys, racing alongside a train whilst taking out bad guys, and searching around arena-like areas rescuing hostages...yes...as you take out bad guys. There are also occasional boss battles to mix things up a little that have serious payoffs so that you can upgrade yr shootin’ iron.
Whilst it’s a shame that there isn’t a two-player mode to get stuck into – something that game almost feels designed for – the many neat touches such as the ability to shoot bullets out of the air, swap guns with fallen enemies on the fly that act as a free reload, and get to grips with your dodge-roll as you weave through the waves of cowboys, taking them stylishly out, timing your reloads and nailing the use of your abilities all add up to make this an incredibly fun title at a frankly preposterously low price.
Westild’s Law? I follow it to the letter, ma’am.
