It’s been a little while, but once again it’s time to spend some time with my favourite console, and take a look at another title from Mega Cat Studios ever-expanding repertoire of video games released on classic systems. I’m also planning a sort of sister article to this series focusing on upcoming Mega Drive games in 2025 – exciting stuff!
Anyway, on to the wonderful Yazzie!
Developed by Retro Souls – the brains behind the addictive Old Towers - the titular Yazzie is a gold digger that must traverse myriad single-screen puzzles, collecting all of the gold in each area, whilst avoiding the zombies, ghosts and hazards that act as obstacles between Yazzie and riches!
The game runs incredibly smoothly, with the same ear for jaunty tunes that you’d expect from the folks that had a looped version of Popcorn in their previous game, and there’s a sense of kineticism (definitely a word, don’t look it up) in each screen, from the dancing flame barrels through to the bouncing gold bars, the enticing colours and animations can almost cover up the trickiness of the later stages...almost.
Things get challenging, but always in a way that feels fair, with faults being the players’ own, as the stages are so meticulously designed and full of character, that the ‘eureka!’ moment always feels satisfying, and the password system only adds to that retro charm.
This is a game of tight, responsive controls, pixel-perfect collision detection and vibrancy that results in a simple premise executed flawlessly that is fun for all the family, as I can attest – we have had several evenings working through Yazzie, and I wish you could have all been at my house when my fiancée pressed the ‘suicide /try again’ button (‘B’) when she just needed to press the mining button (‘A’) ON THE FINAL BLOCK OF A TOUGH LEVEL. I literally made a high-pitched squealing sound that I don’t think I’ve made before or since.
An awesome little puzzle platform game from the team at Retro Souls that really know their onions (love that saying), Yazzie is a game that feels highly replayable and should definitely be gracing your shelf if you are an MD fan, another great release from Mega Cat Studios that comes in a high quality clamshell, MCS-branded box and a full colour instruction manual.
Right, I’m off to earn my fortune in gold!
