As someone who has played games for almost forty years, as much as I love heavy-duty RPGs, horror titles, and a good story – there’s always a part of me that lights up when a game is outright charming, and a celebration of gaming at its most wholesome, it almost feels like gaming at its most pure and innocent.
Cue Rocket Panda, a game developed by Space Pants Games, in which you – as the titular Rocket Panda – must save Biscuit Land from the clutches of the evil Biscuit Head, saving your caged badger friends as you do so.
A jetpack-powered airborne action game, Rocket Panda must avoid obstacles in the environment as he collects biscuits and cups of tea – which allows him a speed boost – as he picks up the captured badgers, that act as one-hit shields as he makes his way through each stage. All is not cosiness and bubbly visuals though! There is a definite challenge to Rocket Panda, as well as several bosses that will need to be taken down on your quest.
Each world has its own theme; be it biscuits, chocolate, ice cream, or candy – with thematic enemies therein. The music is a real highpoint here, perfectly matching the accessible gameplay, and the Rocket Panda theme song that greets you at the start menu is of multi-generational levels of catchy, ear-worminess, and it has become a family tradition that we sing this in its entirety – there’s actual on-screen karaoke lyrics, good! - before each session on the game.
Cutesy, family fun, Rocket Panda is a well-realised premise that feels like an entry-level, child-friendly version of a title like Gravity Force 2, or to be more MD-centric, Sub-Terrania. A really enjoyable title that is worth it for the title theme karaoke sing-along alone!
As usual with Mega Cat Studios, Rocket Panda comes in a reversible cover clamshell hard case with a full colour manual.
Right, I’m off to drink tea, eat biscuits, rescue badgers and beat up some angry toast!
