As Christmas draws nearer my mind always wanders back to when I was at school and constantly talking football and video games as the Christmas holiday came closer and closer.
My talk would always be of the video games or video game consoles or computers that I wanted from Santa that year.
It would vary from year to year and there always seemed to be something to get excited about in the world of video games before Christmas.
Having watched from afar as the gaming world enthuses over The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild I have noticed a common theme with the reviews and opinions of the game. Gamers are enthusing about the game taking them back to the days when video games induced wonder and awe much like the original Legend Of Zelda on the NES did. You know the games I mean don't you?
Playing video games at the ripe old age of 34 (nearly 35) is a different prospect to playing video games when I was 18.
The whole spare time issue rears its ugly head and of course family life must come first.
So for me to play a video game in its entirety and to its conclusion there is an ingenious algorithm that I need to take into consideration in order to free up previous 'dead time' in my day. (The algorithm is a classified secret that I am unable to divulge)
There was a time when my PlayStation 2 was my best friend and I stood by that beautiful hunk of black plastic through thick & thin......
We would spent hours each day together without a care in the world.....
Some weekends we never even left the bedroom......
Me and My PS2 were inseparable....
My PS2 completed me......
I never saw it coming, but we were heading for a massive breakup that would change everything for years!
I think it all started when I started taking my PS2 for granted.
I was no longer buying it new games and that's the first sign of a weakness in any relationship...
I was only using my PS2 for one thing......and that was....................................
Pro Evolution Soccer 4.....
PES 4 was an immense game and yes I did enjoy long sessions on this great game.
But all this was to turn out to be detrimental to my PS2 relationship.
PES 4 would remain in my PS2 loading tray for months on end.
There was no new stimulation in our relationship and as time went on PS2 and I just drifted apart.....
PES 5 & 6 came along and I bought them almost out of habit......but to my shame I never treated PS2 to any of the other amazing experiences that were on offer at the time such as ICO , Half Life or Timesplitters 2.
Poor old PS2 was neglected and this also coincided with the decline of PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER as a franchise which meant I wasn't spending as much time with PS2 as I used to......
Eventually life got in the way of me and PS2 and we had to pack up our pads and go our separate ways.
I had grown to believe that PS2 was only good for PES but if I knew then what I know now this would never have happened....
PS2 was dead to me at this juncture in my life and worst of all Video Games were no longer in my life.
Years passed after the break up as the two of us got older.
PS2 carried on and got stronger with time whereas I drifted away from Video Games completely!
.
There were others....such as PSP but PSP could never match PS2...
It was years later that I was to have a defining moment of Video Games clarity...
I was sitting in my local cinema watching the adverts play as I eagerly awaited the start of the film...
Then, on screen came an advert that made me come alive with passion for video games once again....
The advert in question was for Gears Of War 2 on XBOX 360 and it took my breath away. I couldn't believe how amazing this game looked and how the narrative that played out in that advert touched me.....
It was clear to me that I needed video games back in my life and that I needed an XBOX 360 with a copy of Gears Of War2
That christmas I got my XBOX 360 and from then on Video Games consumed me once again.....but this time I was all about variety rather than monotony..
My L♡VE for videogames was rekindled at that point.....and in particular it meant that I was to eventually dust off PS2 and together we would experience some of the amazing games that we never got round to playing first time around.
This re found L♡VE led to the creation of ☆The Games Freezer☆ and also has led me being able to appreciate all video games from all genres on various machines across multiple generations.......A Truly Happy Ending :)
¿THE END?
Has There Ever Been A Time When YOU Fell Out Of Love With Video Games?
