Captain Kaon - PC

The developer at Engage Pixel previously worked at Creative Assembly, which you will be familiar with if you have ever played a Total War video game (they also created the mighty Stunt Car Racer on the Amiga back in 1989) this is Engage Pixel’s first title and they’ve created a great throwback to a very specific style of game that a lot of people may have missed out on the first time around.

I love EGX Rezzed, it’s such a cool chilled out video games occasion compared to the behemoth that is the all-conquering EGX in Birmingham!

It’s a great opportunity to try out some awesome new games primarily from the Indie Devs of this world but also from some of the bigger devs that are being attracted to this gamers paradise.

Pang Man was our main man at EGX Rezzed this year but I also got to spend some time at Rezzed and I was bowled over by this year's awesome selection of gaming treats.

Having spent a solid number of hours at the Video Games Expo known as EGX Rezzed, I thought it would be good to countdown the best games of the show.

Now let me caveat this with the fact that although I did manage to play a lot of games there were still quite a few titles that I didn't get a chance experience.

So these aren't necessarily the best 10 games of the show but the 10 best (or most intriguing) ones of those that I did get some hands on time with.

I’ve been sitting here thinking about what products would make a video game collectors life that bit easier and also what are the most common problems for a collector of video games.

The recurring theme I seem to come across is the need to store a whole library of video games and video games related magazines and books.

This got me thinking and I was sure that there must be something out there that has been purpose built to solve this video gamer problem.

When I think back to all of the video game genres that I have played over the many years that I have been a gamer there is one genre of video game that I spent the first 20 years of my gamer life playing the most.

In fact, I would say that I obsessed over this genre to the detriment of playing any other genre of game at the time. At this point in my life, I was completely devoured by the need to find the perfect football video game (soccer).

On Thursday I took the day off work to check out the Video Games Exhibition known as EGX Rezzed. Located in Tobacco Dock near Wapping in London, it was pretty easy to get to, just a short journey on the DLR.

I was super excited to go. A day of playing new unreleased games, I mean what's not to like!

The sensible thing, of course, would have been for me to plan what I was going to see in some sort of strategic fashion. However, instead, I kind of ambled around trying out video games that caught my eye.

Bear With Me: Episode 1 - PC
Exordium games is a Croatian video games studio founded in 2014, their website shows that they have released six video games in the space of three years and all seem to be of varying genres. I must admit that I haven’t had the fortune to play their other titles (although some definitely caught my eye) and so this is my first experience with the developer.
Within the first few moments of being given Bear With Me to review, I knew I’d be in safe hands when the launch trailer music reminded me of soundtrack to the mighty 7th Guest. Also, being a sucker for point and click adventure games with a self-aware Noir feel (Tex Murphy, Grim Fandango, Gemini Rue etc.) my hopes were instantly raised and after playing the game for some time I can safely say that those hopes were met and indeed, surpassed.

Battle Princess Madelyn - PC (PRE-ALPHA BUILD)

The Video GameKickstarter campaign for Battle Princess was funded in Just 5 Days!

The clamour to back this game has been phenomenal and I can see why.

This video game has been made with love. It was inspired by a conversation with the developer's daughter as he played through Ghouls N Ghosts and his daughter said she'd like to be in the game. At that point, the idea was born and the creative process began!

I have been lucky enough to get my hands on a Pre-Alpha build of the game to see what the fuss is all about and I'm happy to say that I totally get it and I'm excited to see the finished game.

Very well, in my opinion.

One of my ongoing dreams is to open a video games Barcade in London.

I’ve devoted lots of my free time day dreaming about what my Barcade would look like and the games it would feature.

What it boils down to for me is creating a space to meet friends, eat, drink and play video games.

In particular arcade cabinets would be the main focus for me as these beautiful cabinets evoke memories of childhood crowded round the cab with your friends, usually in awe of the graphics and game-play.

More specifically I would love to fill this gaming space with the finest examples of multiplayer arcade cabinets known to man.

With a premise involving an ignoble cause and a (rightfully grumpy) wronged man, Filthy Lucre starts out with no myth or facade that you are playing a hero. As a criminal working to re-steal the wealth of an elderly man who has been robbed, you must work your way through nonsequential missions of stealth, murder, and theft.

For a while now I have had a desire to create a video games related book that covers the theme of hand drawn video games maps.

I was largely inspired by the Artcade book by (Tim Nicholls) which covered Arcade Cabinet Marquees and also I was inspired by the awesome series of visual compendiums by Bitmap Books which cover some of the greatest retro consoles and computers of all time.

These books have really ignited that nostalgia which surrounds the video games scene right now and I can lose myself in those visually stunning publications while soaking up all the visuals embedded in those pages.
