When we were young a trip to the local Computer Games Shop meant we were presented with reams and reams of cassette games for Commodore 64, Spectrum, Atari XE/XL and many other cassette based systems.

The overriding memory though were the sheer amount of different publishers that were plastered all over these various different cassette tape boxes.

When we hear one of these publisher names now we are transported back to those times when you spent hours pondering what to spend your hard earned pocket money on and then normally plumped for a game on the basis of what the box art looked like or what the written spiel on the back said.

So let us take you on a trip down Publisher Memory Lane from the heady days of Tape Cassette Video Games as we reveal our

It's a question we see pop up on Twitter and video games Forums from time to time and it got us thinking of how retrogaming could potentially be defined.

So, we've had a go at creating The Games Freezer Retronometer….

 

This is not an exact science so we are open to amendment and opinion but this is how we see it……

 

There are 5 points on the Games Freezer Retronometer scale.

 

5 being Retrogaming Classic

1 being Recent / Current Consoles

Ever since I was an 8 year old, walking into an amusement arcade has always filled me with excitement.

Arcades have their own smell

 (I'm not sure what that smell is but I know it when I smell it!!!)

Arcades have their own noises which include bleeps, blurps and digitised voices proclaiming something or other.

It's Brazil vs Croatia that gets us under way tonight and that has really got us in the mood to start thinking about our favourite Football Arcade Games of all time.

 

A trip to the Amusement Arcade would always mean trying to hunt down the best footy game that the establishment had to offer and over the years there have been stacks of attempts to create the perfect arcade game experience.

 

It's got to be said, many didn't come close to getting it right BUT still we played the living daylights out of them as they swallowed our hard earned pound coins….

I'm a long time Championship Manager Fan, since the days of CM93 on Amiga and also an ancient Football Manager fan since the days FM on the Speccy.

With that in mind I've seen both series evolve immensely over the last 30 years...

The management sim genre has seen a shift each time towards more involving and complex gameplay whereby you can have a say in literally every part of 'your club' and how it's run.

That kind of gameplay has meant heaven for gamers with a whole weekend to orchestrate their attack on the division title and cup glory...

But as I've gotten older I've had less free time to plot Spurs' rise to Champions League grandeur and therefore haven’t purchased any of the recent FM or CM games because I know it's going to take me 8 hours to sort out my transfer targets, training regime and backroom staff.

I've wanted to go back to the days of CM93 where you pick your team make a few signings and away you go...

When I was a kid I remember going to the Toys R Us and looking at the games consoles and computers in the glass display cabinets. 

In those days there weren’t any of the interactive displays that you would find today. There were no Game or HMV stores . The only way to get my gaming fix was to watch the demos play in an endless loop.

Luckily my parents got me a Sega Master system for Christmas. 

(Although, I would have happily accepted an NES as well. After all those adverts for Rob the Robot and Duck Hunt on TV were pretty cool!)

One of the first games that I got was the awesome Double Dragon! 

Although pretty unimpressive by today’s standards, at the time I loved it.

Whilst marauding the Mojave Wasteland you get the opportunity to trial many superb weapons.

There are bog standard weapons like the .357 Magnum or the 9mm Pistol.

Not forgetting the fact that there's a whole plethora of melee weapons to utilise such as the humble baseball bat through to the Super Sledge and other quirky ,specially named melee weapons such as

After that you get the rarer versions of your standard weapon set which come affectionate names such as Annabelle and Lucky

Then there's the awe inspiring super destructive weapons such as the Missile Launcher or The Fat Man!

I don't usually go for the latest craze in mobile gaming as it's usually shovelware or a 2 minute fad of gaming hyped up by the press and pushed in peoples faces for 2 weeks only to disappear and never be seen again

 

(or in Flappy Bird's Case, to disappear and magically reappear in a few months time after everyone has been convinced that their video gaming life is missing some kind of badly executed flying mechanic)

 

Anyway, then along came "Make It Rain"…….

 

I picked up on this game while sifting through my Google Alerts and somehow it found it's way into the Retro Gamer alert…Hmmmm???

 

Upon reading the article, I dismissed the game and carried on sifting. 

 

Then after searching video games news on Google I stumbled across "Make It Rain" AGAIN…..

 

This time it was an article on how it is making $50k a day.

 

It's at this point that I took notice of this so called phenomenon and I proceeded to download "MAKE IT RAIN" from the Google Play Store....

 My day was about to be taken over over by £ signs!
