Cartoon games have been given a rough ride as of late. The media seems to paint the picture of games as the villain. They have been blamed for exposing children to violence. But this is a very one-sided image. To completely blame cartoon games for showcasing violence would be vastly unfair. In fact, some people would go as far as to say that games are not responsible for this at all. And, if you delve a little bit deeper then you may find that you agree with this.
Consider the full picture
There are only a very small proportion of video games that contain violence and only a very, very small proportion of these that are cartoon-based games. You should think about all of the other cartoon games available, such as; Tom and Jerry online games, Scooby-Doo games, The Powerpuff Girls games, Adventure Time online games, and much more. Do you really think if your child plays Tom and Jerry online games that they are going to be influenced by a mouse hitting a cat on the head with a pan?
Many would agree that the world we live in today is a judgemental one. People try to encompass everything as a negative. There are people who would try and claim that Tom and Jerry exposes children to a level of violence. Yet, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The games available revolve around colouring in, catching the cheese, and running away from Tom – can this really be considered violent?
Many would be in agreement that there needs to be a reassessment of what is truly exposing children to violence and what is not. There are age ratings there for a reason and if your child is playing a game that is age-appropriate then you should be safe in the knowledge that everything is fine.
It also depends on your mindstate too. Are roulette tables to blame when someone loses a fortune, especially when 20p roulette is available? People have different views, of course.
What about other factors?
To say cartoon games alone are responsible for the exposure of violence is very far fetched, to say the least. After all, there cannot be one sole reason behind something so major? You need to think about all of the other aspects, and granted; you will find that not all of these are within your control.
Do you watch the news in the morning before you take your children to school? The news is full of negative stories and what makes these worse is the fact that they are actually real. Whether you think your child is paying attention to the news or not they will still be aware of what is being said and what is going on. In addition to this, what about music? So many of the modern-day pop songs contain references to violence. This is assured to have an impact.
You also need to bear in mind the fact that you cannot wrap your children up in cotton wool. There is no telling what other children may say to them at school and therefore you cannot guarantee that they will not be exposed to things you deem too old for them to be aware of.
Many will agree that children are exposed to too much nowadays. Yet to blame the exposure of violence on cartoon games is very harsh. There are many other elements that contribute to exposing violence, and many few would say that cartoon games do not have anywhere near such a strong impact as is made out.
